Social-Emotional Content
We believe Social-Emotional development is essential to the survival of our world which is why we have decided to focus on producing social-emotional content for the Talky Talk Show. What exactly is Social-Emotional content? Well, it’s content that centers around human behavior, emotions, and self-regulation. Social-Emotional development involves becoming aware of our own behavior, feelings, and thinking. Teaching children to behave in socially appropriate ways while being their true selves, acting in a way that allows them to be open to learning, and having self-control can further their successes in working and personal relationships.
Social-emotional development consists of three main areas of children’s self-regulation in
1) behavior (behaving in socially appropriate ways and ways that foster learning)
2) feeling (understanding others’ emotions and regulation of one’s own emotions)
3) thinking (regulating attention and thoughts)
When we develop content to support children’s understanding of subjects in these areas, we help them to understand the world around them and build coping skills. Our latest episode on bullying focuses on allowing students to understand what bullying is, how it’s done, identifying if they themselves have been bullied, or if they are actually bullying someone. Bringing issues to the forefront helps us to become aware and comment to avoiding such behaviors. I believe we need to speak about subjects to be clear and establish standards. Leaving people to assume a certain behavior is ok because “That’s the way I was brought up.” Well just because you and your brother Billy used to knock each other around in the back yard, doesn’t mean you can go to school or work and do it to Timmy or Rachel. This will only perpetuate problems in our society simply because we are very individualized yet similar in nature. Building a better, caring, and aware society involves focusing on issues such as Social-Emotional development.
